Digital accessibility

Digital Heroes

In our competence series "Digital Heroes: Digital Accessibility", we explain the most important requirements, provide specific tips and show practical examples of how to implement them successfully.

What is the current status?

Lifts at subway stations, extra-large parking spaces at supermarkets and Braille in museums: in everyday life, increasing attention is being paid to ensuring that people with disabilities can move around better in public spaces and participate in life. Unfortunately, things are different in the digital world. For this group of people, using the internet is still associated with many hurdles and too little thought is given to their needs when designing and implementing digital content.

Digital accessibility is becoming increasingly important

Barrier-free access will be even more relevant in the future for several reasons: firstly, it affects a target group of 7 million people in Germany, or almost 10% of the country's population.

On the other hand, the German government passed a new law in 2021 - the Barrier-Free Accessibility Reinforcement Act. In future, it will not only oblige public authorities, but also providers of online stores, banks and insurance companies, among others, to provide barrier-free access to their digital services.
